Why must sports be an integral part of every child’s daily timetable?

The rules of most sporting activities are built to ensure the player’s holistic development. Let’s take for example mainstream competitive sports like basketball, tennis, soccer, badminton and hockey. Here every player must sharpen their aptitude for quick-decision making, build their physical fitness and strengthen their ability to work in a team. Values as important as these are best learnt by growing children in their pre-teens when they are still maturing. Hence, blocking a couple hours to allow a child to engage in a sport is vital for their optimum growth.

The following are some ways in which the inclusion of physical recreation in a child’s daily routine can affect their quality of life in wholly positive, permanent and noticeable ways:-

They imbibe strong values and moral correctness.

On embracing victory and losses every day as a part of sporting matches, a child learns how to take his losses as a stepping stone towards improvement. With the strict monitoring of game rules, players also learn fair-play and condemn dishonesty and cheating. With regular penalising through deduction of game points, players are better suited to adhere to rules, making them responsible citizens of the larger world. Last but not the least, they grow to be leaders and yet effective team members: both required values to succeed in any contemporary work setting.

They enhance their physical strength and health.

Exercise is a key ingredient to improved immunity - as advised by doctors worldwide. Engaging in sporting activity not only involves full-body workout but also strengths muscles, joints and bones, improves blood circulation and helps in the maintenance of a healthy heart. Spending time outdoors and in fresh air ensures the sustenance of clean lungs and balances hormone levels - allowing the child to get into the habit of enjoying a good night’s sleep and feeling stress-free at the end of every day.

They are goal-oriented right from the start.

Almost every sport requires its player to either make a literal goal, arrive at a finishing line or accomplish a set target in a given time-frame. A winner is a player who is able to perform mindfully with complete focus and a heightened sense of awareness and attention. With every player aspiring to be a winner, they are in constant practice of elevating the aforementioned qualities.

They make deep friendships and long-term connections.

A team that plays together, sticks together. In a sports field, every player portrays their strengths and weaknesses. When teammates witness each other’s contrasting characteristics and still decide to stick with you, they are there to stay. Sports players grow to be more tolerable, a better judge of personality traits, and extremely accommodating.
